GEOGRAPHY

Situated in the sunniest part of the Adriatic, neighboured by Croatia and Italy to the south, and Bosnia and Serbia to the north and west, Montenegro covers an area of 13 812 km2, divided into 3 big areas: coast, plains and highlands.
Its coastline is 293 km long. Geographically and culturally the most interesting coastal parts of Montenegro are “Boka Kotorska Bay” and Budva -Montenegrin “capital on the coast”.

Budva is the most popular summer destination in the whole Balkans. The old town with its fortified walls represents the oldest settlement on the Balkan Peninsula. Riviera of Budva is a luscious place formed of dozen beaches stretching from walls of the old town. The most beautiful beach on the Riviera is Becici beach. In Paris, in 1935 this beach was awarded with the “Grand Prix” as the most beautiful beach in Europe.
Tivat Riviera is the most thriving site on the bay beachfront. Sights of immaculate sandy beaches spreading around dream-like islands covered with olive trees and pine forests, give one the feeling of irreplaceable tranquillity. Tivat is certainly a “must-see” place on the Montenegrin coast.

The most spectacular place on this part of the Mediterranean, situated in surroundings of Budva, is Sveti Stefan peninsula. Built in 15th century, connected with the mainland by 2 beautiful beaches it has preserved the appearance of a Mediterranean village.

Boka Kotorska bay is Europe’s southernmost fjord. It has been inhabited since antiquity and has well preserved medieval towns and cultural monuments. Towns of Kotor, Tivat and Herceg Novi are among the best-preserved towns in this part of the Mediterranean.

Behind the coastal mountains, along the river Zeta, the most beautiful lake in Montenegro found its place. Skadar Lake is the largest in The Balkans (369.7km2) and certainly the richest in islands and wildlife species. Everyone who visits it stays astonished with the serenity of the lake in the middle of rocks. High mountains of Montenegro include some of the most rugged terrain in Europe. They average more than 2000 meters in elevation. At the part of country where plains meet highlands the River Tara is situated with its canyon 1,2 km deep, being the deepest in Europe and the second deepest in the world after Grand Canyon.
